November 6^th, 2008, 6 weeks after swimming in Beijing, Michael Phelps showed up unexpectedly at a house party in South Carolina. He was there visiting Jordan Matthews, a girl that he was secretly dating. Caught up by all the star struck people giving him attention at the party, Phelps began to get a little crazy. He was drinking, flirting, and absorbing all the attention that was being given to him. When someone handed him a glass bong, Phelps did not refuse. He knew exactly what he was doing say some of the people at the party. He had obviously smoked before then. When the media got a hold of a picture of Phelps smoking, Phelps’ aids tried and failed at trying to get the picture not published. This 14 time gold medal Olympian has taken over 1500 drug tests and has come out clean on every one. After this incident, his drug tests, and social/business life have been tainted. He has lost many of the sponsors he had before, he has lost a lot of money, but the question that has yet to be answered is, is Michael Phelps still a hero? In my opinion, he has won many medals, inspired many people, and before this, has never messed up his reputation. Smoking wasn’t very smart, especially when cameras were around, but also, this one mistake should not ruin his whole career. Gaby Deza, A competitive swimmer for the Miami Beach Sea Hawks, gave her opinion on this and said “ He was suspended for three months so maybe that will teach him something, but I think his mom and especially his sisters will help him through it.  He just needs to remember what his goals are and get his priorities straight.”  As long as he does not keep going along this path, he will be able to keep his fans, and hopefully be able to compete in the next Olympics and bring home more medals.
